The Art of Focusing

As with many things in life, learning the art of focusing takes a determined and conscious effort. It takes a mind that is ready for new experiences, challenges and a mind that is ready to see change. The first step to mental focus is reducing or eliminating distractions around you. Some of you may have children running around all day, work and are a mother, work and are a father, pursue school and work, and some of you may be going through a mentally draining time. Whatever it is that you are enduring, whatever your situation may be, you are in the perfect moment to learn the art of focusing. You are capable and you are ready.

Eliminating and reducing distractions does not need to last the entirety of the day or in long-drawn-out periods. It can be in small spurts, and it is quite effective this way. When distractions are high, and I have many things to accomplish throughout the day, I usually choose early mornings to create my distraction-free time. This is the time that I designate to myself and my practice of focus.

This time can be spent reading, writing, working out, cooking, etc. Whatever it is you want to focus on with no distractions, choose that. During this time limit phone time, limit talking to others, and focus solely on the task at hand.

Another way to increase mental focus is through mindfulness and meditation. Mindfulness is when we focus on being present. Being present allows you to rid your brain of distractions and lets you be in the moment. Mindfulness helps to create mental clarity and will improve your ability to concentrate. Meditation can allow us to reduce the amount of anxiety we have as well as reduce the amount of stress. By lowering the amount of stress and anxiety you can receive a higher amount of mental clarity. Meditating allows you to stay engaged for longer periods of time and increase your attention span, which inevitably increases your ability to focus.

A factor that many people forget is the importance of taking a break. Taking breaks allows us to spend time away from the task at hand and healthily let the mind wander and relax. Creating space for new energy and motivation for focus.

Practice makes perfect - so find time in your days to focus on the things you love or want to accomplish. Use these pieces of advice as a guiding tool but never forget it has always been within you. You are wildly capable and ready to accomplish your goals.
