The Importance of Being a Global Citizen

What is a global citizen?

“A global citizen is someone who is aware of and understands the wider world – and their place in it. They take an active role in their community and work with others to make our planet more peaceful, sustainable, and fairer.”

We are all small elements that make up a larger picture. Everything we do, how we interact with the world, and how we view the world, all play a large role in our environment and the international community. By being open to learning about those around us, embracing differences, and creating a space where you seek to understand, you are creating your path to becoming a global citizen.

How we engage with the world is so utterly important. It is key to understanding how interconnected our globe truly is. Staying involved and being aware of the issues going on in other places allows you to be mindful of what different people, places, and communities are enduring.

Creating a better tomorrow has always been a daily goal of mine. I always ask myself, what am I doing today that will create a better world for us tomorrow? I continue my education, I push myself out of my comfort zone to learn new languages, I volunteer in my community in all places I live, and I treat those around me with kindness and love. Going out of your way to give back to the world and push yourself out of your comfort zone, fills you with so much happiness and is truly rewarding. Knowing that I can offer a helping hand or guidance to someone who needs it, will always make my day.

There is no rule that says you must travel to be a global citizen, and if somehow there is I’ll debate it. No matter where you are, you can always open your heart and find ways to understand those around you. No matter where you are, you can offer a helping hand or a kind gesture. No matter where you are, you have the power to create a better tomorrow. Take it upon yourself to understand the issues happening in your community as well as the international community. Find ways to get involved with social causes you care about and be a part of the positive change for the future.

I have fallen in love with understanding and helping those around me and being part of positive change in both my immediate community as well as our global community. I hope you all take it upon yourselves to focus on the issues and people that need it most.

I will leave with you some of my favorite quotes from Anne Frank -

“In the long run, the sharpest weapon of all is a kind and gentle spirit.”

“In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.”

“Human greatness does not lie in wealth or power, but in character and goodness.”
