Powerful Women

I’m sure we all remember the debate done in October between Vice President, Mike Pence and Senator, Kamala Harris. Regardless of what was said in the debate or even the topics covered, there was one specific moment that stood out to me. It was the way Senator Harris handled being interrupted and spoken over by her male opponent on national television. As Forbes states, “Mr. Vice President,” Harris would say each time, reclaiming the mic, “I’m speaking.” After this debate, these quotes surfaced throughout the internet and it was as if we heard a proud cry from women all over.

Let’s fast forward to the presidential election. Kamala Harris became the very first woman to be vice president. That is not all though, Kamala Harris has become the first woman, first African American, and first Asian American to become vice president of the United States. If you haven’t already, go ahead and clap out loud, smile to yourself, and think “wow, that is BADASS.” Vice President Harris, states “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last.”

I think we can all learn very much from women who break through these barriers for us. They are continuously opening doors for women all over. They are inspiring women of all ages and creating this feeling of “I can do this.” As women, I believe it is especially important to stick together and hold each other up. Women alone are powerful, no doubt, but when women come together we are remarkably unstoppable.

What do powerful women have in common?

I think we can all remember a time when we were told something was impossible, or where we were told no, we could not accomplish that. One thing that powerful women have in common, is their ability to understand that anything is truly possible. If it helps, research a woman you admire and read through their personal experiences and the hurdles they have overcome to be at the point they now are.

Let’s talk about Arianna Huffington. As Derin Cag states “Huffington faced 36 rejections from book publishers on the path towards her success. I can personally attest to this mantra– I faced thousands of hard “no’s” when I was trying to get my foot in the door on Wall Street and was laughed at when I eventually quit my job to start LexION Capital.”

To all my women out there, no is simply someone else’s opinion. No, is by no means a reason to stop or give up. Let’s use the answer “no” as fuel to continue making breakthroughs and crushing stereotypes.

Powerful women have a certain presence as they enter a room. This presence has nothing to do with their clothes, hair, make-up, or physical look in any way. It has to do with how they carry themselves. These women are not afraid to make eye contact as they delve into critical conversations. They hold their shoulders back, head high, and often with a wonderful smile. Powerful women are never scared of taking up too much space. They are proud, filled with intent, and flowing with purpose. One of my favorite quotes from Cag’s article is “And one of my favorite traits to see is that they don’t take themselves too seriously. They‘re resilient and able to admit they‘re not perfect.”
